The President of the United States and my opponent Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur have a fundamental misunderstanding of the threat the United States is facing, the nature of the inmates at Guantanamo and the way forward. First the conflict does not mirror WWI or WWII. The front lines are unclear, there are no clear capitols and enemy does not wear a uniform. Make no doubt about it though we are facing the enemy. Descriptions such as unlawful combatants, terrorists and detainees do a disservice to efforts to keep America safe.
Guantanamo Bay is holding the enemy. An enemy filled with the resolve to destroy anything in the path to a global caliphate where democracy, women’s right, free speech and even credit cards are abolished.
The President is rushing to close Guantanamo as if it was the cause of hate, discontent, bombings, axe attacks on trains and murder by semi truck instead of 1500 years of civilizational paralysis in the face of a expanding and tolerant modern world. Real answers are complicated, expensive and messy. Sticking our head in the sand, freeing the enemy will merely get more innocent Americans killed.
