The United States now imports about a half a trillion dollars more than it exports. If our trading partners purchased from us at comparable levels, we would have a $500BB increase in demand and US jobs. Free trade does not include American workers competing on an un-level playing field. A trade deficit all too often means turning a blind eye to abhorrent labor and environmental practices in foreign countries. We cannot adopt onerous policies or place regulations on American companies and American workers and then not protect those companies and workers from unfair foreign competition.
